Cooling Time t5/3

A relevant thermal parameter for the cooling phase from 500 °C to 300 °C, used particularly to assess the embrittlement tendency of high-strength fine-grained structural steels.

The cooling time t5/3 is the time the weld needs to cool from 500 °C to 300 °C. It's crucial for the microstructure. If it cools too fast, the material becomes hard and brittle, cracks threaten. If it cools too slowly, the grain becomes coarse and toughness suffers. You have to choose the heat input so that cooling is in a good middle range. Especially with fine-grain structural steels, you have to pay meticulous attention to this, otherwise you'll have trouble with the weld later.
