Abrasive water jet penetration depth
The maximum material thickness that can be separated with a specific abrasive water jet at a given feed rate without becoming unemulsified. It scales with pressure and particle concentration.
In waterjet cutting, the material is removed by the high-pressure jet with added abrasive. The cutting depth depends on pressure, abrasive amount, and feed speed – too little pressure and you won't get through, too much and you'll shoot through the workpiece or make the edge unclean. Set the parameters so that the jet cleanly separates the material without thermally affecting the cut edge or fraying it. If the result is not right, adjust pressure or abrasive feed in small steps until the cut is smooth and dimensionally accurate.
