Abrasive Feed Rate

The abrasive dosing rate indicates how much abrasive is fed into the water jet per minute. An optimal dosing rate increases cutting performance and extends tool life.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The abrasive dosing rate determines how much abrasive is entrained in the water jet. This mixture is then thrown onto the cutting surface and the tool removes material from the surface being machined.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A dosing rate that is too low can cause the tool not to remove enough material and cutting performance drops. A rate that is too high increases the pressure on the tool and can damage it. Also, too much abrasive can cause over-removal and thus damage to the machining surface.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The optimal abrasive dosing rate varies depending on the material and tool. Generally, for metals with high carbon content (e.g., steel), a dosing rate of 5-10 g/min is recommended. For softer materials like plastics or glass, the rate can be slightly lower, around 2-5 g/min. Make sure the dosing rate is constantly monitored and adjusted as needed.
