Quenching medium

Quenching media are liquid or gaseous media that remove heat quickly and prevent cold cracking. They improve weld strength and reduce porosity.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Quenching media extract heat through direct contact with the components. They have high conductivity, which accelerates cooling and simultaneously prevents hardening phenomena.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without quenching media, cooling can be too fast, leading to glass-hard martensite and causing cold cracking. This reduces weld strength and increases the risk of porosity.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use quenching media in the correct amount to ensure controlled cooling. The application amount varies depending on the material and welding process. For high-carbon steel, precise dosing is especially important.
