Active backing gas
Active forming gas is a gas mixture for root shielding that reduces oxidation processes on the root side through additive components.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Active forming gas contains special additives such as silicon or titanium that bind oxygen in the weld zone and prevent oxidation. These additives react with oxygen in the gas to form stable compounds, so less oxygen can diffuse to the root.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without active forming gas, the root can oxidize heavily, leading to porosity and reduced mechanical properties. Oxidation can also reduce weld strength and shorten component service life. Using active forming gas protects the root, resulting in a higher quality weld.
Workshop Practice & Operating Instructions
Use active forming gas for welding processes with high oxygen content like TIG or MIG. Ensure the gas is used at the correct concentration and dosage. The temperature and welding speed should be adjusted so the forming gas works effectively. Incorrect application can make the gas ineffective or even cause further issues like contamination.
