Active Shielding Gas
Active shielding gas is a gaseous medium that reacts in the weld zone and affects weld properties. It can consist of carbon dioxide or argon-oxygen mixtures.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Active shielding gas chemically reacts with the weld pool and the metals to influence the composition of the weld. It can bind or release oxygen, which controls the strength and toughness of the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Proper selection and application of active shielding gases is critical for a high-quality weld. Wrong gas types or concentrations can lead to porosity, lack of fusion, or altered mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use carbon dioxide gas for stiff steels and argon-oxygen mixtures for finer welding work. Ensure correct gas flow and pressure to achieve an optimal weld.
