Active Gas

Active gas reacts chemically with the melt to control penetration or burn-off. It influences the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Active gas reacts chemically with the metal ions in the melt to regulate penetration or burn-off. This affects the composition and structure of the microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Incorrect selection or concentration of active gas can lead to undesirable phase formations, such as glassy-hard martensite on rapid cooling. This increases stresses and susceptibility to cracking.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use active gas in the specified concentration and according to manufacturer instructions. Continuously monitor the temperature and cooling steps to ensure optimal microstructure.
