Activating flux for welding
Activating welding powder is applied to the workpiece surface before TIG welding to increase arc constriction and increase penetration depth. It improves heat distribution in the weld pool.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The activating welding powder contains chemical additives that activate the workpiece surface. These additives react with the arc and ensure better energy distribution in the weld pool. This makes the arc more focused and the weld penetrates deeper.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Using activating welding powder increases penetration depth, which leads to stronger and more durable welds. However, incorrect use or too high a concentration of the powder can lead to overheating, causing hot cracking or deformation of the workpiece surface.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
• Application: Apply the powder in a thin layer on the surface to be welded. It is important that the powder is well distributed and even.
• Temperature: Application should be done before starting TIG welding, but after the workpiece surface is clean and dry.
• Quantity: Use a small amount of powder to achieve a visible improvement in constriction. Too much powder can cause overheating.
