Active Submerged Arc Flux
Activated SAW flux contains additives that control the burning off or addition of certain alloying elements. It improves weld strength and prevents porosity.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Activated SAW flux contains additives such as silicon or titanium that control the burning off or addition of certain alloying elements. These additives react with the metals in the weld pool and influence the chemical composition of the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Correct use of activated SAW flux improves weld strength and prevents porosity. However, incorrect application or too high amounts of additives can lead to over-alloying, which can cause issues with weldability or hot cracking.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use activated SAW flux in the specified amount. Ensure that the melting temperature and cooling time are optimally set (t8/5 between 10 and 20 seconds). Monitor porosity and adjust the additive amount or welding procedure if necessary.
