Activated carbon filter for gas separation
Activated carbon filters remove gaseous pollutants, ozone, and organic compounds from the welding fume stream through adsorption. They protect the respiratory system from toxic gases.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Activated carbon filters work on the principle of adsorption, where gas molecules are bound to the surface of carbon atoms. The activity of the carbon is directly related to its surface structure and the degree of bonding of carbon atoms.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone are hazardous to the respiratory system and can lead to chronic health problems. Activated carbon filters ensure that these gases do not remain free in the environment, thereby reducing the risk to the welder.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
In the workshop, it must be ensured that the activated carbon filter is replaced regularly. A typical replacement interval is 1-2 months or after a certain amount of processed gas (e.g., 500 m³). Before use, the filter must always be checked to ensure that it is no longer active and has no adsorption capacity.
