Active Solder
An active braze consists of a hard solder to which active elements such as titanium, zirconium, or hafnium have been added. It enables direct wetting and chemical bonding on ceramics without prior metallization.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
An active braze consists of a hard solder to which active elements such as titanium, zirconium, or hafnium have been added. These elements have a high chemical affinity to the surfaces of ceramics, thus enabling direct bonding without prior metallization.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The use of an active braze minimizes the risk of porosity in the weld, as it creates a strong chemical bond to the surfaces. However, incorrect selection or improper cleaning of the solder can lead to the formation of corrosion products and impair the strength of the joint.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use an active braze with suitable active elements for the respective ceramic. Ensure that the solder is clean and cleaned before use. The temperature of the welding process should be set so that the solder works effectively without reacting too strongly or causing corrosion.
