Acoustic Emission Testing

Acoustic emission testing records sudden energy releases in components with piezoelectric sensors to detect crack growth and structural defects.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Acoustic emissions occur during rapid mechanical deformation or cracking in materials. This releases energy that propagates as waves through the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This testing is especially important for monitoring weld quality and strength. Missing or excessive emissions can indicate incomplete welds or cracks that could lead to later structural failure.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use piezoelectric sensors for continuous monitoring during welding. Set a threshold for acoustic emissions (e.g., 50 dB) beyond which an alarm is triggered. Ensure even temperature distribution and correct welding parameters to minimize unwanted emissions.
