Almen Intensity Measurement
A standardized testing method for the quantitative recording of the kinetic energy of the blast media stream using defined spring steel test strips. It serves to ensure the exact reproducibility of the peening process.
The Almen intensity shows you how much energy your shot media really transfers during shot peening. A standard spring steel strip is peened until it reaches a certain curvature. This deformation is your measured value. If your measurements fluctuate or are incorrect, it is usually due to the media or the equipment – nozzle, pressure, or wear. A clean and uniform peening pattern is the basis for consistent quality. If the intensity is wrong, you'll have problems later with the surface and residual stresses in the component.
