Alpha-Beta Titanium Microstructure

Two-phase microstructure of titanium alloys that enables an optimal combination of high-temperature strength and good formability. It is created through controlled thermomechanical treatments.

Alpha-beta titanium is a two-phase structure: the alpha phase is softer and tougher, the beta phase harder and stronger. The mixture gives you a good combination of strength and formability. When welding, you have to be careful not to ruin the structure. If you get too hot or cool too fast, you get an imbalance that can lead to cracks or embrittlement. After welding, heat treatment is mandatory to restore the structure to the desired condition. The exact temperatures and times depend on the alloy – look them up in the data sheet, there are no universal values.
