Alpha-beta titanium alloy
Alpha-beta titanium alloys are two-phase titanium alloys that achieve a good combination of strength, toughness, and hot formability through alpha and beta stabilizers.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Alpha-beta titanium alloys consist of two phases: the α phase (hexagonal) and the β phase (cubic). The combination of alpha and beta stabilizers influences the formation of these phases and their relative proportion in the material. This leads to improved strength and toughness while increasing hot formability.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
When welding alpha-beta titanium alloys, it is crucial to use the correct welding technique and parameters. Too fast cooling can lead to an excessive proportion of β phase, which impairs toughness. Too slow cooling can lead to an excessive number of cracks and deformations. Therefore, a controlled cooling rate is essential.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a controlled cooling rate when welding alpha-beta titanium alloys to ensure optimal compromise stability. The cooling time should be between 5 and 10 seconds per cm² of the weld surface area. Use special titanium welding rods and electrodes for welding to ensure a homogeneous connection.
