Alpha Titanium Alloy
Alpha titanium alloys have a stable hexagonal lattice structure and offer excellent weldability and high creep resistance at elevated temperatures.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Alpha titanium alloys consist of a stable hexagonal close-packed lattice structure (α-phase). This lattice is highly stable and resistant to deformation and creep, enabling high creep resistance at elevated temperatures.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
The stable lattice structure of alpha titanium alloys leads to excellent weldability. However, too rapid cooling after welding can cause cracks and distortions. It is important to keep the cooling rate controlled to maintain the structure undamaged.
Workshop practice & action guidelines
Use controlled cooling rates when welding alpha titanium alloys. The optimal cooling time after welding is typically 10–15 minutes to stabilize the structure and avoid cracks. Use special titanium welding rods and shielding gases to ensure a clean joint.
