Aluminum Temper Resistance

Aluminum anneal resistance is the resistance of aluminum alloys to loss of strength during long-term use at high temperatures.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Aluminum alloys form various phases depending on temperature and alloying elements. At elevated temperatures, certain alloys can lose strength as they transform into softer phases or are altered by diffusion processes.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Low anneal resistance can lead to a reduction in mechanical properties, which can be dangerous especially at high operating temperatures and under load. This can cause cracking or failure in service.

Workshop Practice & Action Items

To increase anneal resistance, aluminum alloys should be treated with stable alloying elements such as silicon or titanium. During welding, careful selection of the appropriate filler and correct cooling are essential. The maximum operating temperature should be kept below the specific limits for the alloy being used.
