Aluminum Degassing Treatment
The injection of inert gas into molten aluminum to reduce the dissolved hydrogen content and prevent porosity in the casting.
When aluminum melts, the liquid metal absorbs hydrogen. When it degasses again during solidification, it creates pores in the casting. You prevent this by flushing the melt with an inert gas like argon or nitrogen. The gas carries the hydrogen out before the metal solidifies. Otherwise, you get porous welds or castings that bubble during welding and don't produce a clean, tight seam.
