Aluminum Cast Alloy Modification
Targeted addition of small amounts of sodium or strontium to silicon-containing casting alloys to form the eutectic silicon in a fine-grained and globulitic morphology.
When welding cast iron, you have to be careful: Rapid cooling can change the structure and create hard, brittle spots. To get this under control, there are additives that distribute the silicon in the cast material more finely. This makes the structure more uniform and prevents it from becoming cracked during cooling. If you don't pay attention to this, the weld will become hard and you won't be able to machine it anymore. So always let it cool in a controlled manner, then the part stays machinable.
