Wrought Aluminum Alloy Homogenization
Long-term annealing treatment of aluminum cast billets at high temperatures to eliminate internal segregations via diffusion processes and ensure hot workability.
You homogenize to balance out the segregations in the cast block. The part is slowly brought to annealing temperature and held there for a while so that the alloying elements are evenly distributed by diffusion. If you skip this, you'll have trouble later during welding and forming because the material will tend to crack and deform poorly. After annealing, you let the part cool in a controlled manner, then you have a homogeneous structure and can continue working cleanly.
