Aluminum-Lithium Density Reduction

The targeted reduction of specific material mass by alloying aluminum with the light metal lithium while simultaneously increasing the elastic modulus. This predestines the material for aerospace engineering.

Aluminum-lithium is a special material that is lighter than regular aluminum sheet, but tricky to weld. The problem is that lithium tends to burn out during welding, leading to porosity and cracks. So you have to work extremely clean and keep the heat under control, not put too much into it. If you don't get the weld clean, you quickly lose the strength that the material actually brings. It's best to check the batch recommendation beforehand, because the alloys vary in sensitivity.
