Aluminum-Lithium Weight Reduction

Lightweight design concept through alloying Aluminum with lithium, significantly improving density and elastic modulus.

Aluminum-lithium alloys are lighter and stiffer than regular aluminum alloys, but you have to be much more careful when welding. The risk of hot cracking is high because the material is sensitive to rapid cooling. Best use TIG with clean shielding gas, but don't rely on any fixed temperature values – you need to develop a feel for the material. Also make sure the surface is absolutely grease-free and dry, otherwise the weld will pick up porosity. And remember: the alloy is more corrosion-prone than standard aluminum, so protect the weld properly after welding.
