Aluminum-Lithium Lightweight Alloy
High-specific material combination where lithium additions drastically reduce aluminum density while simultaneously increasing the elastic modulus through the formation of ordered phases.
Aluminum-lithium alloys are common in aircraft construction, but tricky to weld. The risk lies in hot cracking and porosity because lithium is highly reactive. You need a clean, dry surface and a welding process with high energy density to keep heat input low. Watch the shielding gas flow, otherwise you'll oxidize the material away. If you don't hit the parameters cleanly, you'll quickly get distortion or cracks in the component.
