Aluminum-Magnesium Solid Solution Strengthening
The increase in mechanical strength of aluminum through the incorporation of magnesium atoms into the face-centered cubic host lattice. The lattice distortion substantially hinders dislocation motion.
AlMg alloys get their strength from magnesium, which sits in the aluminum lattice and blocks dislocations. When welding, you must be careful not to heat the material too much or for too long, otherwise the structure degrades and the magnesium diffuses out. The result is cracks and a brittle part. So keep the heat input as low as possible and let the part cool down slowly and controlled after welding, then the strength in the core is maintained.
