Aluminum-Magnesium Seawater Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion resistance of AlMg alloys in marine environments, enabled by the formation of a dense, self-healing magnesium oxide passive layer.

AlMg alloys are highly resistant to seawater because magnesium forms a protective oxide layer. When welding, you must prepare the alloy cleanly and use the right filler metal, otherwise you'll lose this corrosion resistance. Make sure the heat input isn't too high and the weld metal has the same or higher magnesium alloy content. Afterward, thoroughly clean the weld so impurities don't attack the oxide layer.
