Aluminum nitride bonding behavior
Securely binds free nitrogen, thereby preventing undesirable aging phenomena and embrittlement in the material.
Aluminum nitride forms by itself when the hot weld comes into contact with nitrogen from the surrounding air. You don't want this layer when welding because it causes porosity and worsens wetting of the weld metal. That's why you protect the melt with shielding gas so that no nitrogen reaches the weld. Nobody in the workshop artificially applies a nitride layer or nitrides before welding.
