Aluminum Welding Wire Alloy Type AlMg5

AlMg5 is a magnesium-alloyed welding wire for aluminum wrought alloys, offering high strength and seawater resistance.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Aluminum welding wire alloy type AlMg5 contains 5% magnesium. This additive provides improved strength and higher stress redistribution in the structure. Magnesium-rich alloys also have better corrosion resistance, especially against seawater.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Using AlMg5 leads to increased hardness and stress redistribution in the weld. This can cause cracks or hot cracks if cooling steps are not performed correctly. Too fast cooling can make the structure glass-hard and unable to relieve stresses.

Shop Practice & Instructions

Use AlMg5 for aluminum wrought alloys with high strength requirements. Ensure the welding machine is correctly set and cooling steps are controlled. An optimal cooling time of 10 to 20 seconds is recommended to achieve balanced stress in the structure. Avoid rapid cooling steps, as this can lead to hot cracking.
