Aluminum-Nitrogen Binding
Aluminum reacts with dissolved nitrogen to form aluminum nitrides, which promote grain refinement. Too much nitrogen, however, can lead to deformation resistance.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Aluminum reacts in the melt with free nitrogen to form aluminum nitrides (AlN). These nitrides act as nuclei for grain refinement by limiting the growth of new crystal grains.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Too much nitrogen can lead to increased deformation resistance, which affects the formability of the material. This can cause difficulties in filling holes or in complex welding procedures.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Make sure the nitrogen content in the melt stays below 0.1%. Monitor the temperature and gas flow in the weld pool regularly. Use deoxidizers like silicon or potassium fluoride to control nitrogen content if needed.
