Aluminum-Zinc Stress Corrosion Cracking Susceptibility

The inherent susceptibility of high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys to cracking under tensile stress in a corrosive environment. This is primarily caused by an uneven distribution of segregation zones at the grain boundaries.

Aluminum-zinc alloys can crack at the grain boundaries under tensile stress and moisture. That's called stress corrosion cracking. When welding, don't overheat the structure or put in too much heat, or it'll get coarse and the risk goes up. Keep the weld stress-relieved and let the part cool slowly. Humid environment and high mechanical stress are the enemy, so store dry and don't force it into shape.
