Argon-carbon dioxide mixed gas (e.g., 82/18 or 80/20)

Argon-carbon dioxide mixed gas (e.g., 82/18 or 80/20) combines the stability of argon with the deep penetration of CO2. The CO2 gives a faster, finer weld pool, while argon prevents porosity.

Argon-CO2 mixed gas is the standard for MAG welding of steel. Argon ensures a stable arc and calm spatter, CO2 provides good penetration. Common mixtures are 80/20 or 82/18, where more CO2 increases penetration but also causes more spatter. If the weld suddenly becomes porous or the arc runs unstable, usually the gas flow is wrong or the nozzle is clogged. Adjust the gas flow to your material and position, then the weld will be clean.
