Argon Shielding Gas

Argon shielding gas is an inert gas that protects the weld area from reactive air components and allows a stable arc with low spatter.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Argon is a monatomic inert gas with high density. It has a stable electron configuration and does not react with other elements, making it an ideal shielding gas.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Argon protects the weld area from oxygen and water vapor, which can react at high temperatures and cause porosity or contamination. A lack of argon shielding gas can lead to uneven stress, which causes cracks and weld defects.

Shop practice & action instructions

Always use an argon-driven shielding gas cooler. Make sure the gas flow is stable and the weld is fully covered. An average gas flow rate is 10-20 liters per minute.
