Back gouging

Backgouging is the mechanical or thermal removal of the root layer from the back side before welding to avoid defects and cracks.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Backgouging removes the surface with any corrosion products, contaminants, or fine cracks. This improves weldability and prevents impurities from entering the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without backgouging, corrosion products or cracks can lead to internal defects that are difficult to detect after welding. This can result in weld cracks and reduced strength.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use mechanical means like a grinding brush or thermal methods like flame gouging. Ensure the root layer is completely removed and the surface is clean. For fine cracks, chemical cleaning may be helpful.
