Precipitate Coherence

Precipitate coherence is the seamless transition of the crystal lattice of a precipitate into the surrounding matrix lattice, creating elastic lattice distortions and increasing yield strength.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Precipitate coherence describes the seamless transition of the crystal lattice of a precipitate into the surrounding matrix lattice. This process creates elastic lattice distortions that affect the mechanical properties of the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

High precipitate coherence leads to improved yield strength and increased toughness of the weld. This reduces the occurrence of cracks and improves mechanical strength. However, a missing or insufficient degree of coherence can lead to poor mechanical properties and an increased risk of cracking.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To ensure high precipitate coherence, it is important to carefully control welding parameters such as temperature and time, as well as filler metal composition. Optimal coherence can be achieved by selecting the right welding process (e.g., TIG welding) and the correct melting time.
