Austenite Grain Growth Activation Energy
The activation energy describes the energetic threshold for coarsening of austenite grains in the thermally highly stressed zone. It is crucial for optimizing welding parameters regarding toughness.
The austenite grain grows if you put too much heat in during welding or cool too slowly. The grain then becomes coarse, and the steel loses toughness – it becomes brittle and can crack. So make sure you keep the heat input low and don't delay cooling. If the structure is already coarse, only normalizing helps to get the grain fine again.
