Austenitizing Temperature

The temperature above which the microstructure of a steel is completely transformed into austenite during heating. It forms the starting point for the subsequent thermal cooling during the welding process.

Austenitizing temperature is the temperature at which the structure completely transforms into austenite. In welding, this is important because cooling from this range determines the final structure of the heat-affected zone. If you're not in the right window, you either get too soft a structure or risk hardening and cracks. That means: keep preheat and interpass temperature in check, then the structure will be fine.
