Austenitizing temperature

The thermal level at which a steel is fully transformed into the fcc structure to dissolve carbides and establish the starting basis for hardening. It critically determines the grain size prior to quenching.

The austenitizing temperature is the point where the structure completely transforms into austenite. When welding, you have to make sure you're in that range, otherwise the structure remains incompletely transformed and you get hardness or cracks. If you get too hot, the grain grows and the steel becomes tough. Keep the temperature cleanly in the window and then let the part cool in a controlled manner, then it'll be fine.
