Oxy-Fuel Cutting Oxygen Jet

An oxy-fuel cutting oxygen jet is a high-energy oxygen stream that removes the oxidized metal in the kerf.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The jet consists of free oxygen that hits the metal at high speed (approx. 1000 m/s). The high energy of the oxygen reacts with the oxidized surface film, forming an explosive-like reaction that separates the metal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Correct use of an oxy-fuel cutting oxygen jet prevents porosity and improves surface quality. Incorrect settings can lead to incomplete separation or excessive material loss, which can cause damage to the workpiece.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

• Set oxygen flow to 10 l/min for steel and 5 l/min for aluminum.

• Keep the distance between the nozzle head and the metal at 2 to 3 mm.

• Cool the workpiece after cutting with a fine spray to avoid porosity.
