Oxy-Fuel Cutting Material

Oxy-fuel cutting material is a metallic material that is continuously separated by exothermic iron-oxygen combustion. It produces no liquid during welding and requires no external flux.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Oxy-fuel cutting material reacts with oxygen in the air to melt iron scale. This process generates heat and liquid iron used for welding. The reaction is exothermic, meaning it generates heat on its own.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Oxy-fuel cutting material has the advantage of not requiring a liquid, so no external flux is needed. This can lead to better control of the welding process. However, the reaction can become uncontrolled, leading to overheating or excessive fire, which can damage the workpiece. It is also important to keep the oxygen supply controlled to ensure a uniform weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

When using oxy-fuel cutting material, it is crucial to regulate the oxygen supply and monitor the temperature. Too much oxygen can cause overheating, while too little leads to the weld not producing enough liquid iron. The optimal temperature for welding depends on the specific material and should be followed as per the manufacturer's manual.
