Oxy-fuel cutting oxygen purity
Oxy-fuel cutting oxygen purity is the minimum amount of oxygen in the cutting jet above 99.5%. Below this percentage, incomplete cuts occur.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The oxy-fuel cutting process requires high oxygen purity in the cutting jet to make the combustion of the iron workpiece complete and exothermic. An oxygen content below 99.5% leads to incomplete combustion and thus incomplete cuts.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too low oxygen purity can cause the following issues:
• Incomplete cuts: The iron workpiece is not fully burned, leading to inadequate material removal and possible tool wear.
• Reduced productivity: Cutting speed decreases because combustion is inefficient.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To ensure oxy-fuel cutting oxygen purity above 99.5%:
• Use high-purity oxygen sources: Make sure the oxygen in the workshop is at least 99.5% pure.
• Regular testing and calibration: Check oxygen purity regularly and calibrate the cutting equipment accordingly.
• Optimize cutting parameters: Adjust cutting speed and oxygen jet pressure to ensure optimal combustion.
