Axial arc blow

Arc blow is an uncontrolled process disturbance in welding caused by asymmetric electromagnetic forces, leading to lack of fusion.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Arc blow occurs when electric fields are unevenly distributed across the weld gap. These asymmetric forces affect the movement of the arc and lead to irregular heat currents.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This effect can lead to uncontrolled lack of fusion, porosity, and distortion of the weld. It increases the likelihood of hot cracking and reduces the mechanical properties of the material.

Workshop Practice & Operating Instructions

To minimize arc blow, ensure symmetrical electrode placement and optimize voltage settings. Use a stable weld gap and control heat flow through proper gas supply. In severe cases, a special arc control system (LBCS) may be helpful.
