Bainitizing

An isothermal heat treatment in which austenite is transformed in the intermediate temperature range into a needle-like microstructure of ferrite and fine carbides.

Bainitizing is a heat treatment where you bring the steel to a medium temperature and let it transform isothermally. You get a microstructure of ferrite and carbides that is tough and strong – a good compromise between strength and formability. When welding, you have to be careful that the cooling is not too slow, otherwise unwanted microstructure forms instead of bainite. If you want to bainitize the component after welding, ensure clean, uniform heating and keep the temperature constant. Then let the part cool in a controlled manner to prevent cracks.
