Basic welding consumable
A consumable to improve toughness and corrosion resistance of weld metal. It contains lime and has low hydrogen content.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The basic filler material consists of lime (CaCO3) and other stable additives that, during welding, form a protective layer around the metal. This layer protects the weld from corrosion and prevents hydrogen from acting, which increases toughness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks During Welding
Using a basic filler material leads to improved strength of the weld and prevents corrosion. However, missing or incorrect filler can lead to insufficient corrosion protection or too high hydrogen content, which can cause cracks or deformation in the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the basic filler material in the concentrated form recommended by the manufacturer. Ensure the environment is dry and clean to achieve optimal coating. If corrosion protection is missing or insufficient, check the filler and the weld for possible corrosion damage.
