Basic welding flux

A submerged arc welding flux that yields clean weld metal with exceptional low-temperature toughness.

Basic powder in SAW welding produces particularly tough, low-hydrogen weld metal. The slag binds sulfur and phosphorus and keeps air away from the weld pool. That's important when you need cold-crack-resistant seams, for example with thick plate or lower temperatures. But watch out: If the powder is damp, you get hydrogen into the pool and thus pores or cracks. So always store the powder dry and bake it before welding. Mill scale and dirt on the plate must also be removed, otherwise alloying elements burn off and the weld becomes hard and brittle. The slag can be a bit stickier depending on settings and harder to remove. That's normal; you have to play with voltage and wire speed until the arc runs smoothly and slag comes off clean. For anything where toughness matters, this powder is the first choice – but only with clean technique.
