Build Chamber Residual Oxygenation
Residual oxygenation in the weld zone is the increase in oxygen partial pressure in the process area, which leads to oxide inclusions in the metal.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Residual oxygenation occurs when oxygen comes into contact with the metal complex. This can be caused by missing or insufficient shielding gas supply or by mechanical disturbances in the process area.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Oxide inclusions can impair the strength and toughness of the metal. They lead to cracks, deformation, and reduced component life. In severe cases, the metal can be completely damaged.
Workshop practice & instructions
To avoid residual oxygenation, the oxygen partial pressure in the process area must be continuously monitored and controlled. Use adequate shielding gas supply and check the mechanical integrity of the process area. If suspected, carry out a thorough inspection and correct any potential disturbances.
