Pickling Wastewater Neutralization
Pickling wastewater neutralization is a process for treating acidic wastewater from pickling plants by adding neutralizing agents and precipitants. This serves environmental protection and compliance with legal limits.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Pickling wastewater contains acids like sulfuric acid, which are neutralized through chemical reactions with neutralizing agents such as calcium hydroxide. This changes the pH of the water from acidic (low pH) to neutral or slightly basic (higher pH).
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
When neutralizing pickling wastewater, it is important not to over-neutralize the water, as this can lead to too high a pH and affect the effectiveness of welding consumables. Also, make sure all legal environmental standards are met to avoid fines and ecological damage.
Shop practice & action instructions
1. Determine the pH of the pickling wastewater with a pH meter.
2. Calculate the required amount of neutralizing agent based on the pH and volume of the water.
3. Pour the neutralizing agent slowly into the water while continuously monitoring the pH.
4. After neutralization, add a precipitating agent to remove dirt particles and clarify the water.
5. Re-check the pH and ensure it is within the allowable range (in Germany usually between 6.0 and 9.0).
