Wettability

Wettability is the ability of a liquid to completely cover a solid surface. It is determined by the contact angle and affects penetration into pores.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The wettability of a liquid depends on the contact angle, which is the angle between the liquid surface and the solid surface. A low contact angle means better wettability.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Poor wettability can prevent the test penetrant from entering fine pores, leading to inaccurate test results. This can cause functional failures or safety risks in the final product.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To ensure good wettability, use liquids with a low contact angle. Regularly test the wettability of the penetrant on the surface to be inspected and make sure it fully penetrates.
