Beryllium oxidation inhibition

Beryllium prevents oxidation and scaling in copper alloys during melting by blocking oxygen.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Beryllium forms a dense layer on the surface of copper alloys that excludes oxygen from the environment. This layer prevents oxygen from entering the metal and slows oxidation processes.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without beryllium content, copper can oxidize quickly, leading to porosity and weak spots. Too much beryllium (above 0.2%) can make the metal hard and brittle, impairing formability.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use copper alloys with a beryllium content of about 0.15%. Make sure the weld pool is clean and oxygen-poor. Avoid excessive temperatures as they accelerate oxidation reactions.
