Quality level ISO 5817 C

ISO 5817 C is an assessment group for welded structures with standard mechanical loads. It allows moderate irregularities within specified limits.

Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism

ISO 5817 C defines a quality level for weld quality based on the assessment of irregularities and defects. This group takes into account both visual and mechanical properties of the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Assessment group C is suitable for structures subject to medium mechanical loads. It accepts a certain number of defects and irregularities, meaning it is less strict than higher groups such as A or B. However, these irregularities must stay within certain limits to ensure the safety and service life of the structure.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

For classification under ISO 5817 C, the following criteria should be considered:

• Visual inspection for defects such as cracks, damage, or incomplete weld coverage.

• Mechanical testing to confirm hardness and strength of the weld.

• Adherence to maximum allowable values for irregularities such as toe angle, defects, or uneven edges.

The exact limits vary depending on material and application. It is important to follow the specific guidelines for the material and structure used.
