Quality Level according to ISO 5817

The assessment group according to ISO 5817 classifies imperfections in fusion welds and defines permissible defect sizes and frequencies. It provides a quality assurance basis for the design of welded components.

Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism

ISO 5817 defines different assessment groups (A, B, C) based on the size and type of imperfections in fusion welds. These groups help assess weld quality.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Improper classification or overlooking imperfections can lead to safety issues, as it may result in insufficient strength and toughness of the joint. This increases the risk of cracks and failure under load.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

When welding, it is important to consider ISO 5817 assessment groups. Carefully inspect the weld for imperfections and classify them accordingly. If necessary, re-weld to ensure the joint meets requirements.
