Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion

Biocide corrosion is caused by bacteria or fungi that release aggressive substances or change the environment. This accelerates rusting and can lead to damage to metals.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

Bacteria and fungi produce chemical substances like acids that directly attack the metal. They can also change the pH of the environment or form layers that accelerate rusting.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Biocide corrosion can lead to rapid rusting and wear of metals. This can cause strength failure in weld areas or generally shorten the service life of the component.

Workshop practice & instructions

Before welding, use a clean surface and remove all bacteria. Use corrosion-resistant materials or protect the weld with a corrosion Corrosion Inhibitor. Regularly inspect the weld quality for cracks or wear.
